Treatment of Condyloma Acuminatum with Interferon. Annual Report September 1983-September 1985

The principal purpose of the studies is to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of different interferon preparations in the treatment of the common sexually transmitted disease, condyloma acuminatum. An initial study of the efficacy and toxicity of intralesionally administered interferons to patients with refractory disease of at least three months' duration has been nearly completed. Intralesional administration has been well tolerated but commonly associated with transient pain. Few systemic side effects have been observed, and alterations in routine laboratory tests have been slight. The code for the study has not been broken, but a preliminary evaluation of the course of disease in all study participants demonstrates a significant decrease in the mean lesion area of injected warts. In addition, almost one-half of these lesions have completely resolved. Uninjected warts have shown more modest decreases in size and total resolution. A study of the efficacy and toxicity of parenterally administered interferon in the treatment of patients with previously untreated disease of short duration has been initiated recently. In addition to determining efficacy and toxicity, the study is also designed to evaluate potential differences in rates of antibody formation against the different interferon preparations.
