The Executive Directors of The World Bank commissioned this publication to mark the retirement of A. W. Clausen after five years of most distinguished services as President of the institution. Tom Clausen believed strongly that the objectives, policies, and record of The World Bank and its affiliates should be made known to as wide an audience as possible, and that this was an important means of winning broadly based public international support for the institution's work in promoting economic and social development. The author therefore gave willingly of his time and devoted much to addressing vital economic and social development issues in important public fora around the globe. His major addresses, assembled in this volume, testify to both his profound wisdom and his untiring dedication.
