Round-Table Discussions on the Development of Phosphates and Phosphate Fertilizer Industry in Developing Countries Held at Gafsa, Tunisia on 17-23 November 1985. Report of the Meeting

The Fourth Consultation Meeting on the Fertilizer Industry convened by UNIDO at New Delhi on 23-27 January 1984, strongly recommended that co-operation among developing countries in the field of fertilizer industries should be strengthened through exchange of experience and information, and technical assistance, as well as to improve the operation of their existing fertilizer plants. Fertilizers play a fundamental role in the production of food needed for the survival of mankind. Many developing countries have natural phosphate resources but do not have appropriate technologies. Industrialized countries have developed optimum fertilizer production technologies, but are dependent on the developing countries' supply of high-grade phosphate rock. In both the developing and developed countries, demand is growing for the development of new beneficiation and conversion processes. The developing countries' governments realize that for economic reasons phosphate fertilizer plants should be established near the source of raw materials.
