Expert System for Automated Digitizing of Engineering Drawings

The project examined the feasibility and advantages of a rule-based system approach for the rectification of digitized drawings and their conversion to a useable CAD/CAM format. A vectorization procedure was developed. The appropriate data structures in which the graphical information must be cast for adequate interfacing with a rule-based system were determined and a layer of portable image-processing modules was finely tuned. A test bed of synthetic patterns was developed. The key pathologies appearing during the transformation of a bit map into vector format were determined and documented. The architecture of an expert system for automating the manual rectification phase which inevitably occurs after vectorization was developed.
