Simulating the Effects of Dam Releases on Grand Canyon River Trips

The Lucas-Shechter Wilderness Use Simulation Model (WUSM) was modified to simulate the effects of Glen Canyon Dam releases on river trips through Grand Canyon National Park. Three trends were revealed by the WUSM model: The lower the release, the slower a party traveled, and consequently the less time available for attraction site visits. As flows lower, more delays occurred at rapids -- however this is an individual decision determined by the boatman.
