Development of a Metal Tube Crash Cushion for Narrow Hazard Highway Sites

The report describes the analytical and experimental work which resulted in the development of an inexpensive nonproprietary metal tube crash cushion which can be used at narrow sites. Examples of such locations include the ends of guardrail and median barriers, bridge pillars, and center piers. The report first compares the relative merits of employing aluminum vs. steel as the energy dissipating element in the crash cushion. It then describes the scale model quasi-static and impact experimental program which leads to the design of the full scale impact attenuation device. Finally, two different cover concepts are developed for use in both the Connecticut Impact-Attenuation System (CIAS) and this new narrow hazard crash cushion. It is recommended that a reinforced heavy duty vinyl coated TXN18 polyester fabric cover be used.
