摘要

In January 1987, the Minerals Management Service sponsored a workshop in Anchorage, Alaska attended by scientists, regulators, and resource managers with expertise in the Bering Sea or in offshore monitoring programs elsewhere in the United States. The purpose of the workshop was to develop an environmental monitoring program for the Bering Sea. The report presents a summary of the workshop proceedings and suggests optimal statistical sampling designs for the monitoring approaches suggested at the workshop. Three specific components were recommended for inclusion in the monitoring program; sediment chemistry, bioindicator species, and benthic invertebrates. Sediment chemistry parameters recommended for analysis include the trace metals barium, chromium, and vanadium as well as a number of aromatic and heterocyclic hydrocarbon compounds. The concentrations of these compounds in sediments has been shown to be influenced by oil and gas development activities.
