Bearing Loads in Slider Crank Mechanisms

The slider-crank mechanism is used in many applications including internal combustion engines, punch presses, and many applications requiring reciprocating motion. This is a study to measure the bearing reactions in a slider-crank mechanism and to compare the results to a rigid body model. The method of analysis includes designing a mechanism using a rigid-body model that predicts the expected loads on the mechanism. The parameters will be estimates of the final mechanism parameters. To measure the bearing reactions, the crank and slider will be suspended on load transducers. The mechanism and support will then be built. Next the bearing reactions will be measured with the aid of a computer based data acquisition system. Then the actual mechanism will be modeled using the same procedure as the initial estimates. The results of the measured and the final model will be compared.
