In October of 1987, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Archaeological Research Laboratory (UWM) conducted an archaeological survey of 25.9 acres for the proposed refuge headquarters, pair ponds, water control structure and land exchange at Horicon National Wildlife Refuge in Dodge and Fond du Lac counties, Wisconsin for the purpose of identifying any prehistoric or historic sites present in project areas. Survey methodology combined walkover coverage in areas where surface visibility was high, with shovel testing where the ground was covered with vegetation. Shovel testing coverage of the I-2 water control structure resulted in the discovery of a prehistoric habitation site (47 Do-478) with scattered evidence from the Middle Woodland time period (200 B.C.-A.D. 400), including a grit tempered, rocker stamped sherd. An historic stone wall (47 Do-479) in collapsed condition was also recorded in the same project area. A single test unit excavation of the prehistoric site revealed cultural material to a depth below the ground surface of 35 cm and no visible plow zone. The site extends into the project area, and is therefore recommended for evaluation for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
