Distribution, Abundance, and Biological Characteristics of Groundfish in the Eastern Bering Sea, Based on Results of the U.S.-Japan Triennial Bottom Trawl and Hydroacoustic Surveys during May-September, 1985

The report summarizes information from the 1985 survey on the abundance, distribution, and biological characteristics of major groundfish species as well as for squids, octopuses, and shrimps. The discussion section also includes a comparison of abundance estimates for principal species and species groups from the 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1985 cooperative U.S.-Japan surveys. Appendices to the report contain diagrams of fishing gear used, basic station data, and results of computer analyses of the data. In addition to the cooperative survey, two special studies were conducted to examine the diurnal vertical movements of walleye pollock. The studies were to assess the potential bias of summing hydroacoustic and demersal trawl biomass estimates.
