Trends in Medicare Participation and Assignment Rates, 1984-1987: The 1987 Physicians' Practice Follow-Up Survey

The 1987 Physicians' Practice Follow-up Survey was sponsored jointly by the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation (ASPE) and the Health Care Financing Administration (HCFA) and was designed to address several high priority health policy issues. Physicians participating in the 1983 Physicians' Practice Costs and Income Survey, also sponsored by HCFA, were recontacted in 1987 to take part in the follow-up survey. The study examined changes in the Medicare participation program over time. At the time the survey was conducted, four sign-up periods had taken place. Participation rates over time and what motivates physicians' decisions to sign or not to sign or to change their decision are examined.
