Oil Refineries Waste Survey: Disposal Methods, Quantitities and Costs

A survey has been carried out on the generation and disposal of wastes by 75 oil refineries in Europe. The results presented in the report cover the types of waste produced, their quantities, disposal routes and costs of disposal. Various techniques to minimze the production of wastes are considered, especially the pretreatment of sludges to reduce the quantity requiring disposal. The total quantity of waste requiring disposal in 1986 amounted to 0.5 million tons. This is very low in comparison with the total refinery throughput of 387 million tons, representing only 0.13%. The report shows the aggregated data on waste quantities and disposal routes used by the refineries. The survey revealed wide variation in disposal costs depending on the particular properties of the waste, and local conditions.
