Investigation of Salvaged M1 Helmets

Investigation of groups of helmets containing various types of defects for the purpose of determining whether or not salvage is possible indicate that: (1) No salvage should be attempted when helmets have been exposed to heat sufficiently intense to discolor the metal. (2) Dented helmets may be repaired without danger of increasing the susceptibility to service cracking when the dents are confined to the crown of the helmet. (3) Pin holes in the chin strap loop welds neither impair the strength of the weldment nor lower the ballistic resistance to caliber .45 bullets.
