Active Electrodes to Be Used in Advanced Alkaline-Water Electrolysis

Some active electrodes to be used in alkaline water electrolysis are discussed. As far as the cathode is concerned Pt, NiB, NiCo sub 2 S sub 4 , Ni sub 3 S sub 2 , FeS sub 2 and Fe have been investigated. An interesting electrocatalyst seems to be nickel sulfide. The role of iron in the electrocatalytic activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction is not clear at the moment. A beneficial influence has been noticed when Fe-ions were reduced under conditions of hydrogen evolution. As anode materials Ni, NiCo sub 2 O sub 4 have been tested out. NiCo sub 2 O sub 4 as well as Co sub 3 O sub 4 show good results compared to Ni for the oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline medium. (ERA citation 08:011954)
