Applicability of Fracture Toughness Data to Surface Flaws and to Corner Cracks at Holes

Fracture toughness tests were carried out on 7075-T6 and 2024-T3 Al alloys. The specimens contained surface flaws, corner cracks, or corner cracks at holes. They did not show a constant K sub Ic, and it is pointed out that basically there is no unique K sub Ic for surface flaws. Toughness data of surface flaw specimens can be used to predict the residual strength in case of elliptical flaws in more complicated geometries. (Author)
