摘要

A state-of-the-art review of the discipline of fracture mechanics was performed. Emphasis was placed on those engineering fracture mechanics concepts presently considered most applicable to the Space Shuttle vehicle. The concepts explored include fracture toughness, precritical flaw growth, failure mechanisms, inspection methods (including proof test logic), and crack growth predictive analysis techniques.
