A technique for deconvolving a system resolution function from noisy data according to a minimum error criterion has been derived and implemented on a digital computer using a fast Fourier transform algorithm. The procedure has been applied to data obtained from an experimental rangegated ladder target imaging system in order to (1) improve the range resolution (i.e. full width at half maximum of the range resolution function) from 16.6 meters to 5.5 meters, (2) to define the range origin to an accuracy of 1.5 meters, and (3) to perform subjective filtering in range for the purpose of either smoothing or enhancing high frequency detail.
