Results of a theoretical study and an accompanying experiment are presented concerning the visual scene perception process and its impact on aircraft approach performance. Visual scene characteristics were represented by the configurations involved. Their effect on approach performance and human information processing (primarily in terms of observation noise spectra and perceptual thresholds) was investigated utilizing a model of the visual scene perception process. The model is based on linear perspective geometrical cues and on relative (visual) motion cues and is combined with the optimal control model. Results are presented of an automated model matching procedure. Via a first order gradient method, a matching criterion (involving variances and frequency domain data) was minimized yielding a set of observation noise model parameter values. These values led to the perceptual thresholds associated with the visual cues involved.
