Radial profiles of electron density, temperature, and H beta intensity are presented for the rotating plasma device F-1. The hydrogen filling pressure, the average magnetic field strength at the midplane, and the power input to the discharge were varied in the ranges 10 to 100 mTorr, 0.25 to 0.5 Tesla, and 0.1 to 1.5 MW, respectively. These experiments were performed in order to study the gas blanket (cold-mantle) state of the plasma. It is shown that a simple spectroscopic method can be used to derive the radial distribution of the electron temperature in such plasmas. The observed peak temperatures and densities are in agreement with earlier theoretical estimates.
