Spectrographic Investigation of Gold by Grimm Lamp

The applicability of the Grimm-type low pressure electrical discharge, for the analysis of different gold alloys was investigated. A correction method was developed by Jager to compensate for the variation in sputtering rate due to changes in sample composition. Second and third order polynomials containing 20 terms were used to fit calibration curves of corrected intensities versus elemental concentrations. The best precision obtained for gold was 0,122% relative standard deviation on a concentration of 80%. The accuracy obtained for gold, silver, copper and lead using 15 different standards, is reflected in the best average deviation from the accepted value, together with the corresponding concentration ranges of the elements.
