Shock Structure Near a Wall in Pure Inert Gas and in Binary Inert Gas Mixtures

Flow data for pure argon were collected for shock Mach numbers = 2.24, 3.55, 6.46 and 9.21. Density was measured with a multibeam laser differential interferometer. These data are compared with numerical results of a direct simulation Monte Carlo method. Flow becomes two dimensional where a shock wave touches a wall although strong wall influence is limited to one mean free path distance from the wall. Numerical results agreement with measurements varies, but can be improved by applying a proper intermolecular force potential and accomodation coefficient. The BGK model density profiles deviate considerably from numerical and experimental results. Wall material greatly influences density profiles.
