Application of Briles Rivets for Mechanical Jointing of Aramid Reinforced Aluminum Laminate (ARALL)

Lap joints in ARALL riveted with MS and BRILES countersunk rivets were compared. The BRILES rivets increase the static strength of ARALL lap joints by 4%. This increase is mainly caused by the larger shear bearing area compared to MS and NAS rivets. The BRILES rivets extend the fatigue life of ARALL lap joints by 50%. This increase is caused by the improved clamping and reduced fretting damage of the BRILES rivets. The low profile ring dome head of the BRILES rivet facilitates thin skin installation.
