The load analysis, software, and development of a multiprocessor for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and the use of off the shelf equipment are discussed. The algorithms for processing SAR images from raw data are described. The processing load in terms of arithmetic operations, the necessary memory sizes, and transfer rates is estimated. The system and development software for the CESAR multiprocessor system are described. Machine considerations, high order language for CESAR (based on Pascal), operating system, communication protocols, linking and loading, debugging and reliability, and reconfiguration capabilities are highlighted. The CESAR configurations to meet the SAR processing specifications are considered, based on SVOP and MARS 432 processors. The MARS 432 fits very well in the CESAR system. However, the SVOP can be used in a modular, flexible system of CESAR.
