Mechanics of Field-Consistency in Finite Element Analysis: A Penalty Function Approach

C(O) continuous beam, plate and shell elements are very popular. In displacement type finite formulations, the difficulties of shear locking, parasite shear, and stress oscillation are rationalized by using field consistency concepts. A priori quantitative error estimate of these difficulties can be made by using an operational procedure, the functional reconstitution technique. The mechanics of these concepts are demonstrated by using the simplest shear flexible beam element as an example. Its a priori projections are verified through digital computations. The rationale behind the use of optimal stress sampling at Gaussian points is derived directly from these arguments.
