Validation of a Software Package for Communication Systems Analysis and Design: The TOPSIM 3 Software

The TOPSIM 3 software package for communication system modeling and analysis was validated in a performance evaluation of the bit error rate of an on board regenerative repeater. The repeater consists of a 4 GHz modulator, with a 120 Mbps data rate, a transmit and receive filter, and a coherent demodulator, used in phase shift keying transmission links. The telemetry, tracking, and command subsystems of Telecom 1 were used to test phase locked loops, phase modulation, and digital devices. Of 19 tests, 14 are considered good, 4 acceptable, and 1 poor. Recommendations for improving TOPSIM are made.
