Rotational Structure of Field Reversed Configuration (FRC) Plasma Produced by theta Pinch

The rotation of the plasma with a field reversed configuration (FRC) was observed in STP-L (Staged Theta Pinch-Linear) experiments in Nagoya University. The produced plasma in this experiment can be divided into three parts, i.e., the core plasma (FRC plasma), its surrounding halo plasma and the escaping guide plasma. The rotation of each plasma was measured from the Doppler shift of CV-spectral line, the relative ion current and the streak photographs, respectively. As a result, it is shown that the behavior of plasma rotation changes from the double structure to the triple structure when the plasma is all detached from the discharge tube, and that the FRC plasma in the early phase is rotating in the direction of electron diamagnetic current, even if the plasma touches at the discharge tube.
