This report covers the first phase of a project aimed at developing and testing flight simulator motion-base algorithms suited to commercial jet transports. Full six degrees-of-freedom motion of a synergistic motion -base is being studied. Three forms for these algorithms are being considered:n(1) classical linear washout,n(2) optimal control ,n(3) coordinated adaptive washout.nIt is felt that the latter two techniques may provide some advantages over the classical , which is currently employed in most commercial flight simulators. The aims of this project are to:n(1) develop the necessary equations,n(2) implement the necessary software in real-timen(3) evaluate the performance of the software with the help of test pilots in a complete flight simulation.nThe present report describes the development of the equations and the software used for testing them. At this stage the evaluation of the performance of the algorithms is based on predicted pilot motion sensations and motion-base travel. The motion sensations are formulated from linear models of the human vestibular system. At present the actual motion-base hardware is not employed.nThe results of many test runs of the algorithms are presented to demonstrate their proper operation and their effectiveness. Several modifications to existing formulations are suggested.
