Elements d'Une Machine de Montage pour l'Audio-Visuel (Elements of a Film Editing Machine)

The generation of editing of film sequences from a conceptual representation of the scenario and of the rushes is studied. The units pertinent to the comprehension and to the generation of the film are identified. These units are modeled using techniques inspired by Schank's work on natural languages. The inference mechanisms of film comprehension are also described. A part of the study is based on general cinematographic knowledge such as constraints on sequencing of two shots and standard ways of editing certain actions. A prototype of the editing machine is described.
