Inviscid Model of Planar, Separated Flows of Finite Extent

A treatment for the equations for two dimensional, inviscid, incompressible flow when the flow region contains a separation bubble of finite length is presented. Outside the separated flow region small-disturbance theory is used to solve the potential-flow equations. Within the separation bubble, where the flow is assumed to have uniform vorticity, the slender-eddy approximation of Childress (1966) is employed. The solution is completed by matching the pressure across the vortex sheet that divides the two regions of flow. Solutions for the flow past trenches and backward facing steps are given.
