It is shown which polarization ellipses can be generated by a quarter-wave plate by taking into account the effects of phase deviations of the quarter-wave plates from pi/4. The mode of operation of quarter-wave plates and Faraday rotators in transmitting and receiving antennas is presented, especially as to setting errors. It is shown how the slope of the major axis of a polarization ellipse can be measured by the use of two independent orthogonally polarized receiving antennas if the polarizations of the receiving antennas are determined by quarter-wave plates and Faraday rotators. The misadjustment of the Faraday rotators caused by hysteresis effects is demonstrated with respect to linear polarization; it is shown how to avoid these errors.
