New Approach to Integration Testing of Large-Scale Software Packages

Integration testing of software modules into large scale packages using a system model and error classes built from the source code of the package is described. Coverage and ambiguity are defined with respect to error classes; operators are defined and related to error spaces. Test sequences are constructed on operator ordering. Criteria to define single sequences and their concatenation into a test procedure to maximize error coverage and minimize ambiguity are proposed. Theorems to identify the best test procedure for the overall system are proved. A Petri net model of test actions and procedures allows an easy identification of the optimum test procedure.
