An overview of the definition of the user interface to integrated systems as defined by the CCITT norms is presented. Architectural issues seen from a viewpoint of the principles of the reference model for Open Systems Interconnection are included. Broadband technology is discussed. It is shown that the specification of the protocols and services recommended for usage in integrated services are incomplete and imprecise. It is concluded that the smallband system is a step on the road to an integrated broadband network, providing a communications service with throughput quality of service parameters selectable from a large range of values.
