A program was conducted to determine the feasibility of using solid film lubrication in liquid sodium. Attention was concentrated on the formulation of coating systems based on binary combinations of calcium fluoride with either barium fluoride, lithium fluoride, or sodium fluoride. Among the reasons for choosing these compounds were their chemical inertness in reducing environments and their nonabrasive character.nA number of compositions were successfully bonded to nickel-chromium alloys by firing the coatings to fusion in a dry hydrogen atmosphere.
