FUNCTIONAL ASPECTS OF THE SYSTEMS OF SPATIAL REPRESENTATION IN THE CONTROL OF BODY MOVEMENTS ⅠOVER-ALL CONSIDERATIONS

Man, and presumably animals, are endowed with a system of spatial representation whereby various features of the environment as well as various portions of the body are represented in their true spatial relation, Data for the representation are supplied by external sensors, mainly the eyes;data for the position in space of various portions of the body are supplied by proprioceptors. The entire representation is operated upon during a body movement on the basis of vestibular and proprioceptive signals. During a body movement there is a shift in the sensed direction of body axis in order to provide rate information in the control of body move ments.
