Some Background Information for the Workshop.

By way of an introduction to the Workshop on Cold Moderators for Pulsed Neutron Sources, this paper surveys the highlights of early cold source developments, summarizes the world situation in existing pulsed neutron sources and advanced pulsed neutron source projects, and explores some of the general features and performance of cold moderators for pulsed neutron sources.
