Guidelines for Pathology Services in General Hospitals.

Guidelines are provided for the formulation of plans and review of needs for pathology services in general hospitals. These guidelines, developed by the Northeastern Wisconsin Health Planning Council, Inc., are designed to be used in the development of plans related to pathology services in general hospitals, in the Section 1122 review process concerning the feasibility of applications which include pathology services, and by hospitals in planning and developmental roles. In general, these guidelines provide that: (1) pathology services be available to all persons in the Northeastern Wisconsin Health Planning Council District; (2) the planning process must be in evidence to support every program; and (3) constraints to cooperative efforts be cast aside in favor of alternatives which promote the effective use of pathology resources. Criteria and standards are proposed for services, utilization rates, regionalization of services, planning, facilities (workload and space), staffing, and financial considerations. Criteria are also suggested for contractual agreements with pathologists, organizational considerations, and physicians' office facilities. Procedures for implementing and updating the guidelines are included.
