A primary objective of this report is to show that a computational model for the stemming operation is both feasible and desirable. This report establishes the feasibility of such a model by developing and presenting mechanical models for the various phases of the stemming operation. These mechanical models are based on the principles of the mechanics of solids, fluids and granular materials. The desirability of the computational model is argued on the basis of its aid in the stemming operation design process.
