The existence is proved of an optimum flyer material for initiation of detonation of a high explosive whose initiation criterion has a particular form. Algebraic equations are derived which implicitly define shock pressure vs. particle velocity relationship of the optimum material. The form of the initiation criterion studied is shown to be equivalent to several other forms of initiation criteria. Examples show the system may be sensitive to the form of the initiation criterion and the performance of the system may be improved by choosing a flyer material which approximates the optimum.
