High Energy Absorption Chocks for a 10-Ton UF sub 6 Cylinder

A new, light-weight, high-energy absorption chock has been designed, built, and tested to provide a high degree of impact protection for UF sub 6 cylinders under both normal and accident conditions. Tests under a simulated UF sub 6 loading have indicated that a 10-ton type thin wall UF sub 6 cylinder, which contains 20,000 pounds of liquid UF sub 6 with the high-energy absorption chock (HEAC) attached at each end, would not rupture when dropped onto a 16-in. thick reinforced concrete pad at heights up to 12 ft. Further testing or study to determine the applicability of this new cylinder protection device for use with other UF sub 6 cylinders may be worthwhile. (ERA citation 04:031107)
