Reaching Troubled Youth: Runaways and Community Mental Health

This collection of 23 papers provides an overview of runaways and runaway centers and reviews specific short-and long-term services. The section on innovative mental health services illustrates how runaway programs respond to the needs of young people and shows how these programs affect and are affected by the surrounding community. The section on peer counseling describes the experiences of participants in such programs. Some of the programs implemented to meet the long-term needs of young people are the focus of the section on long-term care. In the section on prevention, a review of various programs precedes a detailed description of how one program actually works. The segment on training discusses the needs of runaway program counselors and some of the ways in which mental health facilities examine the programmatic and policy aspects of the relationship between runaway programs and mental health centers. Finally, the pros and cons of accreditation and licensure in the face of maintaining program identity are the subjects of study.
