An analysis of the population density as a function of radial distance during an emergency evacuation identifies several significant contributors to evacuation time. Population distribution and density, as well as the location of high population density centers, are critical to evacuation time. A thorough understanding of the population characteristics of an EPZ and their effect on evacuation time is necessary if emergency planners are to select the best method of evacuation.
