Search for 17-KeV Neutrinos in the beta -Spectrum of sup 63 Ni

In a recent study of the beta -decay of sup 3 H, evidence for the existence of a heavy neutrino of mass approx. =17 keV admixed with a strength of approx. =3% to the ordinary neutrino have been reported. Despite the failure of several other experiments to find evidence for this neutrino, the topic has remained controversial. This report describes the results of a search for heavy neutrinos in the beta -spectrum of sup 63 Ni using the Caltech double-focusing iron-free beta -spectrometer. 7 refs., 2 figs.
