摘要

The use of Raman spectroscopy for the detection of chemical agents, precursors and by-product chemicals relevant to the verification of chemical weapons treaties has been evaluated. Four types of Raman-based systems have been considered: remote surveillance, field analysis (including in-plant monitoring) and microprobe analysis. The practicality of the development of such systems is dependent upon the magnitude of the Raman cross section. Since this increases with the fourth power of the frequency, the use of UV radiation is of great benefit. Further, based upon literature data, it appears that a large enhancement of the cross section for several agents can be expected in the UV due to near-resonance effects. It was concluded that Raman-based systems using UV radiation could be developed with sensitivities in the range of 100 ppM or less. 12 refs., 4 figs., 4 tabs.
