摘要

This report describes the results of experiments performed in various areas ofmaterial and component technology required for the development of gigabit optical interconnect and communication systems. First, we will summarize the analysis of transient and optoelectronic feedback sustained pulsation of laser diodes at 1300 nm for use as frequency variable sources in time division optical systems. Next, we describe the design and characterization of a colliding pulse Mach Zehnder modulator capable of performing all optical demultiplexing at data rates approaching 100 Gbps. Then, we comment on the investigation of ultrafast electron and hole tunneling in ternary asymmetric double quantum wells which may be suitable materials for use in future fiber based communication systems. Finally, we report on the development of a low voltage real space electron transfer modulator for use in high speed optoelectronic systems. This work is a continuation of in house efforts begun under 62702F, JON 4600P206, and summarized in RL-TR-94-86.
