First International NATO/SICA Training Exercise on the Identification of UnknownPeptides

The TNO Prins Maurits Laboratory (TNO-PML) participated in a NATO/SICA trainingexercise organized by Canada on the identification of unknown peptides to test the capabilities of laboratories in the analysis of mid-spectrum agents (toxin, bioregulators). With the use of electrospray mass spectrometry the molecular weights of five unknown peptides were determined. Of four unknown peptides the complete sequence was elucidated and partial data for the fifth peptide was provided. The TNO-PML results on molecular weight determination and sequencing of peptides are very promising, however, more experience is needed in the field of derivatisation and handling of biological samples.
