Arresting the Collapse of a Shaped Charge

A novel technique is presented to inhibit the collapse of a liner from a shapedcharge device containing the full explosive load. The technique involves the use of wood or plastic (Lexan), a steel mandrel, and a momentum trap. The wood or plastic acts to attenuate the generated shock waves and allows complete recovery of the liner apex region and most of the remaining liner material. Three experiments were successfully conducted to verify the concept, and computational simulations were performed in order to understand the material interactions and allow for improvement of the design concept. Arresting the collapse process allows for study of the liner collapse, and provides material samples to analyze the change in liner microstructure as the material undergoes severe deformation. Also, the momentum trap provided a nonperforating spall experiment that is being used to study the material failure algorithms in the various hydrocodes.
