An excimer laser was purchased to perform in-situ measurements of acetylene in fuel-rich flames. The acetylene measurements were performed by fragmenting acetylene with the intense 193 nm wavelength laser output and then detecting the fluorescence from CH and C2 fragments that were formed in excited states. The measurements were compared with mass spectrometer measurements and were shown to agree spatially. The data were used to determine where a soot model accurately predicted the spatial distribution of hydrocarbon growth regions in flames and the trends followed by the peak acetylene concentrations in response to changes in combustion conditions.
