Remarks on 'Electron-Microscope Study of Snow-Crystal Nuclei'.

Mr. Kumai has obtained some interesting electron- microscope pictures of nuclei of snow crystals which fell in Hokkaido at an altitude of 1050 m. These pictures are surprisingly similar to some pictures of cirrus-crystal nuclei which we have obtained. The cirrus crystals were collected with a Dewar flask and kept unmelted until they were placed under the electron microscope. Fig. 1 is similar to Mr. Kumai's fig. 1. Fig. 2 corresponds to his fig. 6. The particles shown in fig. 3 are similar to those shown in Mr. Kumai's figs. 8 and 11. Finally, fig. 4 corresponds to fig. 12 of his paper. Fig. 5 shows a particle not shown by Mr. Kumai, which is most probably quartz; this seems to be confirmed by an electron-diffraction powder pattern (Debye-Scherrer diagram), which shows clearly a quartz ring. In addition to the quartz ring, there are other rings due to clay (kaolin, etc.), lamp- black and organic substances. (jg).
