The principles of the Absolute Block System in the General Rules cannot be fully understood without some knowledge of block instruments and the various methods of working signals and points. Chapters VII and VIII are accordingly devoted to describing certain typical block instruments in use on Indian Railways;while some methods of working signals and points are dealt with in Chapters IX to XI. No attempt has been made in these Chapters to treat the subjects exhaustively. The writer has naturally described the practice with which he is most familiar;and, writing as an Operating, man for Operating men, he has omitted technicalities which only concern the Specialist.nChapter XII deals in greater detail with the object, scope and arrangement of the book, and has been written for those responsible for training and examining staff. It is hoped that Instructors and Examiners may find the particulars in it of some assistance.
