Evaluation of Carbon Black Dispersions in Polyethylene to Predict Weatherability

Pending further weathering data, it seems reasonable to conclude tentatively that a carefully standardized absorptivity measurement at a fixed film thickness with white light can give a useful prediction of the weatherability of polyethylene pigmented with carbon black. It is also concluded that the best dispersions of carbon black in polyethylene presently available are probably about as good as can be made, since their absorptivity equals that of evaporated carbon films. The low-power microscope dispersion ratings cannot be considered to give very reliable forecasts of weatherability. (Author)
